September 1, 2024, the 39th Anniversary celebration of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) began with a significant moment as VP Sara Duterte graced the occasion. Her speech resonated deeply with the members of the KOJC, offering inspiration and encouragement. The most impactful moment came when she humbly sought forgiveness and apologized to the congregation. In her words, she expressed:
“Hinihingi ko lang ang patawad ninyo na nagkamali ako, nagkamali ako sa paghinging tulong at suporta n’yo para kay Pangulong Bongbong Marcos. (“I am asking for your forgiveness because I made a mistake, I made a mistake in asking for your help and support for President Bongbong Marcos.)
I was on the mistaken belief that we were together on the platform of unity and continuity. Nagkamali ako kaya hinihingi ko ang patawad ninyo. (I was wrong, so I am asking for your forgiveness.)
You know, this has been going on for 9 days, an assault sa inyong Kingdom Nation and I could not come earlier dahil meron ding take sa Opisina ng Pangalawang Pangulo at hindi ko maiwanan ang aking mga kasamahan sa OVP. But always remember na wala man ako lagi sa mga masasayang araw nino, pero nandito ako lagi sa inyong kalungkutan.” (You know, this has been going on for nine days, an assault on your Kingdom Nation, and I could not come earlier because there was also work at the Office of the Vice President, and I could not leave my colleagues at the OVP. But remember, even though I may not always be present in your joyful days, I am always here in your times of sorrow.)
Learning from Mistakes
Leadership is often characterized by strength, intelligence, vision, and decisiveness. However, humility is one of a true leader’s most overlooked yet essential qualities. Humility in leadership is not about meekness or weakness; rather, it is the capacity to recognize one’s limitations, acknowledge mistakes, and embrace the opportunity to learn and grow. This quality is particularly crucial for leaders tasked with guiding nations with high stakes, and the consequences of decisions are far-reaching.
What distinguishes a great leader is not the absence of mistakes but the willingness to admit them. Acknowledging mistakes builds trust and credibility among the people. It demonstrates that the leader is committed to transparency, accountability, and integrity, encouraging others within the government to do the same.
Moving Forward
Having acknowledged her mistakes and absorbed the lessons they offered, VP Sara Duterte is now poised to advance with a renewed sense of purpose. Her humility in leadership stems from a profound understanding that her mission transcends any single misstep, reinforcing her unwavering commitment to serving the nation. This approach fosters trust and loyalty among the people.
Indeed, in the complex and often turbulent political landscape of the Philippines, a leader like Sara Duterte, grounded in humility, is exceptionally well-prepared to steer the country toward a brighter and more promising future.
