The Strategic Relevance of Asian Wisdom in an Era of Great Power Competition

On April 14, 2025, as part of the pre-conference events of the Annual Meeting of the Think Tank Asia Forum, I had the honor of participating in a high-level, closed-door dialogue among leading Asian think tank representatives, distinguished scholars, and academics from premier universities across the region. The dialogue tackled critical and timely issues, including the intensifying China–US rivalry and its implications for the strategic landscape in East Asia, the evolving role of the Global South countries, the contours of a new international political and economic order, and the future prospects of developing a more cohesive Asian think tank network. I was invited to share my views on these pressing matters, and in this piece, I aim to reflect on those discussions and offer my insights to a broader audience.

In the complex arena of China-US rivalry and the strategic environment in East Asia, the situation has been significantly exacerbated by the tariff trade war waged by the US against China and, to some extent, the world. This trade war not only disrupts the economic relationship between the two largest economies but also has far-reaching implications for global trade and economic stability.

Here, Asian wisdom offers a much-needed alternative perspective. Asian cultures have long-standing traditions of seeking harmony and resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiation. For example, the concept of harmony in Asian philosophy emphasizes the importance of balance and cooperation. Instead of the confrontational approach of the trade war, this wisdom advocates for a win-win solution. Both China and the US could engage in sincere and in-depth negotiations, focusing on mutual benefits. An escalated trade war can disrupt the well-established regional supply chains, which are crucial for the economic growth of many Asian countries. Also, developing countries in the Global South, which rely on international trade for their economic development, often bear the brunt of the trade war’s collateral damage. By applying Asian wisdom, we can encourage both sides to step back from the brink of further escalation and work towards a more stable and cooperative relationship.

Moreover, Asian wisdom can play a vital role in promoting a more just international economic order. The trade war, with its protectionist measures, goes against the principles of free and fair trade. Asian countries can advocate for a rules-based international trade system that is inclusive and takes into account the interests of all countries, especially those in the Global South. By emphasizing cooperation among equals and the importance of common development, Asian wisdom challenges the traditional power-centered economic order.

Conclusion

In conclusion, in the face of the US-led tariff trade war and the complex international situation, Asian wisdom, deeply rooted in our rich cultural heritage, offers valuable solutions. By applying these principles, we can work towards a more stable and prosperous global governance structure that benefits all nations.
